Moving Forward Together: Laura's Empowering Mobility Makeover

Laura and her mother, Lisa, smile as they try out her new power wheelchair.

At Mobility Equipment Recyclers, we've seen the tangible impact of simple acts of kindness. Our goal has always been to provide affordable mobility solutions to those with disabilities, and Laura's story perfectly embodies this mission.

Laura's Story

Laura is a remarkable young woman grappling with a neuromuscular disorder known as Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. This condition limits her mobility and necessitates a wheelchair for her daily life, but it hasn't stopped her from enrolling in college or getting not one but two jobs! As we learned about Laura's goals and the obstacles she faced, we knew we had an opportunity to make a difference.

Laura's existing mobility scooter was inadequate for her needs and cannot be taken to school or work, but repeated requests for a power wheelchair were met with insurance denials. The prospect of independence, education, and employment were slipping away. This situation called for community action.

The Gift of Mobility

Paula Kleniewski from Full Swing Golf RI reached out, urging us to consider Laura for the Gift of Mobility—an initiative we're immensely proud of. The Gift of Mobility isn't just an annual event; it's a year-round commitment to providing mobility equipment and services to those in need. This program reflects our dedication to the community that has supported us. We were honored to help Laura access the mobility that will enable her to succeed at home, school, and work!

The Permobil power chair Laura received is more than just a wheelchair; it's a tool for empowerment and independence. With features tailored to her needs, this power chair will help Laura navigate her college campus and excel in her job. Laura's journey serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can lead to significant change. It highlights the potential for collective support to create positive impacts. Laura's story, marked by determination and unwavering spirit, shows us that mobility is about unlocking opportunities.
